2019 JAC/HGP Printmaking Sans Frontiers Exhibition, Cape Town, South Africa.
Titled: H G Printmakers - Printmaking `Sans Frontiers`, relief print workshop, 2019, Cape Town.
The workshop will be held in conjunction with and during the` There and back to see how far it is` - Hard Ground Printmakers / Jonathan Comerford - 30 years of Collaborative printmaking, Retrospective exhibition. The exhibition will be held at the Association of Visual Arts , opening on the 26 September to 19 October, 2019, in Cape Town. A presentation of the publication and distribution of prints to artists will be done on the 19 October, at the closure of the exhibition.
Project description:
The H G Printmakers Relief Printmaking portfolio projects aims are to initiate the collaboration between a diverse group of professional South African artist / printmakers through printmaking, on this occasion linocut. To foster unity amongst artists to show case the visual diversity of contemporary South African art and the South African diaspora.
Objectives:
H G Printmakers and my primary objective is to produce a professionally produced body of prints with which the artist and HGP can use to, sell, distribute, promote, share or donate to support personal self – sustainability. It is also about the challenge of distance collaboration, by HGP providing materials, tools and technical support to enable artists to have the freedom to work out of their own studios to design and cut their block/blocks prior to the setting up of the workshop to print.
H G Printmakers will be sponsoring the production of a single linocut print of A4 (30cm x 20cm) size format, providing lino blocks, paper, technical support and editioning. The projected outcome will be an edition of 30 prints, 5 artist and 5 printers’ proofs which will be shared equally between the artist and HGP.
Theme:
There is no theme, it Sans Frontiers, no borders. It is about crossing borders in each artist`s personal interpretation and technical expression in the use of the relief printmaking medium in collaboration with me as printmaker.
Technical support:
As I am currently situated in London, until my arrival in Cape Town on the 20 September. On acceptance of the invitation, I will be co ordinating the project, besides email, via Messenger or WhatsApp to facilitate a more immediate communication in regard to providing technical support and material distribution.
Material support:
HGP will be providing 2 lino blocks and a set of cutting tools, on loan, for artists who need tools, let me know if you have your own or need tools. The AVA will be facilitating the distribution of materials and tools to the artists, who accept the invitation.
I will notify you when the blocks and tools will be available to collect. However, if you can access lino blocks of the same size, 30cm x 20cm, to get started you will be reimbursed a lino block from HGP.
H G Printmakers studio:
I will be establishing a `pop up` Hard Ground print studio at the AVA Gallery from the 30 September for the duration of the exhibition. You will be able to bring your block to proof print , get technical assistance from me and to do final cutting if need be prior to editioning.
